posture

Dear 6th, 7th & 8th Grade Parents/Guardians:

As required by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, the school nurses will be conducting postural screenings to check for back concerns, including scoliosis, for students in grades 6, 7, and 8 at Blake Middle School. Screenings will take place beginning Monday, February 23, 2026, and continue through the first week of March.

In addition to postural screening, students in grade 7 will also receive a Body Mass Index (BMI) screening, which includes height and weight measurements.

Please note that your child receives both of these screenings annually from their primary care provider as part of their routine physical. Participation in school-based health screenings is optional, and many families choose to excuse their children. If you decide to do so, we kindly ask that parents or guardians notify the school nursing staff by completing this OPT OUT FORM

by Friday, February 13, 2026, prior to the February school vacation break.

Postural Screening & BMI Screening

For postural screening, students will be asked to remove their shoes and shirt so that their back can be properly viewed. For privacy and comfort, girls are encouraged to wear a sports bra or bathing suit top. Postural screenings for students in grades 6, 7, and 8, along with BMI screenings for students in grade 7, will be conducted during physical education classes in private areas adjacent to the gym. All screenings are completed individually by the school nurses and are strictly confidential, ensuring each student’s privacy.

Parents or guardians will be notified if a postural screening indicates the need for follow-up with your child’s primary care provider. For additional information about the state-mandated postural screening program, please click here
