Class Of 2024 Vector Art, Icons, and Graphics for Free DownloadPlease visit the class site for important information regarding end of year events, senior service days and final exam information. Pay particular attention to the details regarding attendance expectations and its impact on grades/credit, service days and final exam exemptions.

HANDBOOK HIGHLIGHT #33

Attendance Procedures:

Absences are tracked by individual class as well as daily arrival/departure.

  1. Students are permitted 6 unexcused absences per term.

  2. Students are permitted 15 total absences per term, excused or unexcused.

    • If a student exceeds 6 unexcused absences or 15 total absences, credit will be withheld from those specific courses.

    • If a student exceeds 15 absences in a single term, they will not receive a conventional grade for that term. The course will be marked with ‘N’ (No Grade) on the report card for all classes impacted.

    • If a student receives a No Grade (N) in 2 terms of a full-year course or 1 term of a semester course, the final grade will be an N and no credit will be issued.

  • Credit recovery options will be made available to students wishing/needing to regain lost credit. These plans are specific to the student’s particular needs, but generally entail making up missed work, remediating lost class time, and adhering to the attendance policy in the subsequent terms.

  • Parents/guardians will be notified when a student reaches their fifth unexcused absence in a single term. This may include email notification, phone call, and/or meeting with the Assistant Principal.

  • Seniors who exceed 4 unexcused absences/10 total absences during the fourth quarter will not receive credit for that term.

For more information, please visit the MHS Student Handbook.

YOUNG ADULT DOCUMENT SIGNING DAY

At the fall Open House, Attorney Deb Hedges (also a senior parent) shared important legal documents that students should sign after they turn 18. The forms allow parents or guardians to continue to help make financial, legal, and health choices for their adult children after coming of age in Massachusetts. These forms should be signed before a Notary Public or witnessed by independent persons, or both.

We will provide the blank forms and help 18-year-olds understand how to fill them out.

MiRcore, a non-profit research organization with the mission to democratize medical research would like to inform you that the application for our annual summer camps for highly motivated high school students is now open! Students will have the chance to research with tools that scientists currently use. Our camps provide a great opportunity for students to learn more about the intersection between biology and computer science, and work with other students with similar interests. During the camps, students will learn and engage in computational biology tools, analyzing high-throughput sequencing data, and R programming with machine learning for research. Our camp sessions offered include the Computational Biology Camp (CB), Biotechnology Sequencing Camp (BTS), and R Programming & Machine Learning Camp (R Camp). We also offer a special 3-week Sequencing Your Genome Camp, where students can sequence their own genomes!

A unique feature of our camps is that following the summer, students can continue their learning experience with the miRcore Volunteer Program, which meets throughout the school year online (remote students) and in person (at the University of Michigan and Scripps Research Institute). Our volunteer program guides students in year-long group research to publish research abstracts and to present at our Annual High School Research Conferences (2024 keynote speaker: Dr. Anthony Antonellis, Chair of the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Michigan). Beyond personal research advances, the miRcore Volunteer Program supports student growth in leadership and healthcare advocacy through student-directed voluntary activities. Volunteers are trained to lead the school club Genes in Diseases and Symptoms (GIDAS), where they teach other students precision medicine and research methods to participate in the Conference. There are also opportunities to get involved in advocacy through miRcore Science Advocacy, where we train students to empathetically share important and sensitive science topics with others, such as genome privacy.

The flyer attached to this email includes the dates and times for all the 2024 summer camps we offer. Please let students know about this amazing opportunity! MiRcore would love to have motivated students from Medfield Senior High School join our camps!
