HANDBOOK HIGHLIGHT #26

SPORTS AT MEDFIELD HIGH SCHOOL

Medfield High School is a member of the Tri-Valley League which is comprised of twelve schools: Ashland, Bellingham, Dedham, Dover– Sherborn, Holliston, Hopkinton, Medway, Millis, Norton, Norwood, and Westwood. The Athletic Program at Medfield High School offers a much diversified choice of sports to each student for their participation.

COMMITMENT

When trying out for a team, and being selected to be a member of a team, Medfield High School students are expected to attend all practices and games of that team. In order to allow students time to meet with teachers and to get extra help, practices will not begin until 2:50 p.m. Practices will average approximately two hours in duration. Students should expect to practice every weekday. Weekend practice sessions vary by sport and should be expected, although in general, Sunday is primarily reserved as a no-activity day across the high school.

Interscholastic athletics demands more of a commitment than a club or recreational activity. Students should be aware of the time commitment prior to trying out for the team.

DAILY PARTICIPATION

During tryouts and after team selection, the head coach will distribute and explain expectations related to practice times, locations, and game schedules. Students are expected to make at least a five-day, two-hour daily commitment to the team each week.

At the freshmen and junior varsity levels, most teams do not practice or play on weekends. At the varsity level, weekend and/or evening practices and games are more commonplace, and students should expect regular involvement during these times. Because our teams share facilities and some teams use facilities off- campus, practice and game hours may vary considerably.

At all levels, in all sports, students are expected to provide their own transportation to and from practices.

SCHOOL/FAMILY VACATIONS, EXTENDED ABSENCES, CONFLICTS

Every team member is expected to be present for all team practices and games. Varsity team members should plan on practice and game commitments through vacations.

For more ATHLETICS information, please visit the MHS Student Handbook.

FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE

Substitute Nurses Needed…Can you help?

Substituting will offer the opportunity to learn what school nursing involves and to interact with our wonderful students. The need is sporadic, but the rewards are great! A current Massachusetts RN license is required and at least one year of pediatric nursing experience. Duties include: tending to the health needs of the students, dispensing medication, and communicating with parents. A basic orientation is provided. Please reach out to Brittany Hardiman, Nurse Leader, bhardiman@email.medfield.net for more information.

EMPTY BOWLS IS BACK THIS YEAR!

For those who may be unfamiliar, Empty Bowls is a community event that combines pottery and food to raise money with proceeds benefiting the Medfield Food Cupboard.

Participants have a chance to take a pottery class where they will make a bowl, which will be used at the big event to eat out of. No time to make a bowl? No problem! You can join us in May and we will have bowls available for purchase. This year, we will be enjoying an Ice Cream Social with our handmade bowls on May 9th.

We have had a loyal crew of regulars the past few years, and we would love for more folks to get involved and join us...it is a lot of fun!

Please follow this link to sign up (or use the QR below) and feel free to reach out with any questions.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY CELEBRATION

(image L-R: Ana Lacy, Mia Remington, Evelyn Buckley)

MHS senior Mia Remington, former principal for the Athena Council, the youth leader arm of the Massachusetts’ Metrowest Commission on the Status of Women,* and current intern for the Commission, conceived, organized, and was the announcer for the International Women's Day event on Friday, March 8, in Natick. This event featuring women and girls celebrated women's achievements and was a platform for advocacy and unity within the metro-west community.

MHS Girls Who Start Chapter co-president Evelyn Buckley and co-secretary Ana Lacy introduced one of the speakers.

International Women's Day is a globally recognized occasion that commemorates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women while also calling for gender equality. This year, the MetroWest Commission on the Status of Women is organizing an event that highlights the resilience, strength, and contributions of women from diverse backgrounds.

The event will feature a series of inspiring speeches, artistic performances and interesting vendor displays all aimed at promoting gender equality and empowering women. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with thought leaders, activists, and community members, fostering dialogue and collaboration on issues affecting women locally and globally.

In addition to the enriching program, the event will also support a worthy cause - combating period poverty. The MetroWest Commission on the Status of Women is partnering with Fihri, a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing period poverty, to provide period poverty kits to those in need. These kits contain essential menstrual hygiene products and aim to alleviate the financial burden associated with menstruation for vulnerable individuals.Athena Council, the youth leaders arm of the Massachusetts’ Metrowest Commission on the Status of Women, learning how to be an advocate, using education and community involvement to make change.

The MHS Girls Who Start chapter is part of an international, non-profit organization with the mission to:

  • inspire by creating events that showcase female entrepreneurs

  • build by giving young women tools and opportunities to make their entrepreneurial ideas a reality

  • connect by creating an international community of young women who want to change the world (https://www.girlswhostart.org/).

The Medfield High School Girls Who Start (GWS) chapter organizes a speaker series, and has opportunities to participate in GWS, regional, and state learning and empowerment opportunities to promote women leadership in business, government, and their communities.

FROM SEPAC

In 1987, President Reagan recognized March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month to increase "public awareness of the needs and the potential of Americans with developmental disabilities" and to provide the "encouragement and opportunities they need to lead productive lives and to achieve their full potential." - National Disabilities Institute. According to the CDC, "Developmental disabilities are a group of conditions due to an impairment in physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. These conditions begin during the developmental period, may impact day-to-day functioning, and usually last throughout a person's lifetime." Disability is highly nuanced as no two people are the same or experience their diagnosis the same, which can make it hard to know how to talk about it. Check out this 17-minute NPR Life Kit on talking about disabilities to learn more.

Sometimes, there’s a perception that a child’s disability/diagnosis needs to present in a certain way or severity to join SEPAC, but SEPAC is for everyone. So please mark your calendars for our spring Workshops & Parent Connection Groups:

3/12 NEW IEP Process with Director of Student Services Mary Bruhl, 7 pm, Blake Middle School Library. SEPAC Board meeting after.

3/19 Autism Spectrum (ASD)Parent Connection Group, 7 pm Medfield Public Safety Building

3/21 Down Syndrome Parent Connection Group, 11:30 am Medfield Public Library.

4/1 ADHD Parent Connection Group, 7 pm Medfield Public Safety Building.

4/3 Dyslexia + Language-Based Learning Disabilities Parent Connection Group - 7 pm Medfield Public Safety Building.

4/23 Executive Function with Ali Spidalieri, M.Ed BCBA, 7 pm, Blake Middle School Library. SEPAC Board meeting after.

Details are always available on our website and social media (FB & IG)! Our workshops and board meetings offer childcare, and a remote link can be made available if you'd like. Our workshops and board meetings are open to EVERYONE. You do not need a child on an IEP or 504 to attend. RSVP to SEPAC@email.medfield.net or by completing the RSVP form: https://forms.gle/SeeQg6Apmngad5dq7

Our parent connection groups are limited to parents and caregivers of children with the corresponding diagnosis. Please email sepac@email.medfield.net with questions or to join a group. If you want to connect with a parent with experience with a diagnosis not covered by our current parent connection groups, don't hesitate to contact us, and we'll work to find someone to connect with.

We hope to see you!

If you haven't taken a second yet to pre-order a yearbook copy now while supplies last, please do so ASAP. Luckily, the price has been frozen at $95 for the rest of this school year, which is a good deal since the final price has long been $100. Here is the ordering link.
