HANDBOOK HIGHLIGHT #11

TARDINESS POLICY AND DEFINITION

  • Any student not in their first-period classroom by 7:40 a.m. will be considered tardy. Office detention will result following the third unexcused tardiness per term.
  • Unexcused tardiness to any class in excess of ten minutes will result in an unexcused absence from that class.
  • Three unexcused class tardies per term may result in a teacher detention.

Penalties for Unexcused Tardiness to School (per term)

  • The first three tardies to school result in no formal consequences.
  • Fourth and subsequent tardies to school result in office detentions (up to the seventh tardy). Students are notified in person on the date of their fourth tardy.
  • The seventh and eighth tardy to school will result in Saturday School.

SATURDAY SCHOOL

  • Saturday School sessions are designed to provide an appropriate consequence for students resulting from a variety of infractions. Saturday School is viewed as an alternative to suspension from school. Some offenses for which Saturday School might be assigned include excessive tardiness, truancy, leaving school grounds without permission, use of tobacco/smoking devices, failure to serve office detentions, repeated class cuts, forged notes, use of profanity, repeated violation of electronic device policy.
  • Saturday School is scheduled for twelve sessions during the school year, and from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
  • Students who are assigned Saturday School must arrive by 8:30 a.m. with enough school work for the entire time block.Cell phones will be collected by the proctor.
  • Students who arrive late will be sent home, and students who are uncooperative will be asked to leave.
  • Students who are absent without administrative approval, arrive late, or are uncooperative will be considered for suspension.

For more information, please visit the MHS Student Handbook.

FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE

CAFFEINE AND CHILDREN

MPS Nurses would like to share some information on caffeine and children. Pediatricians advise against caffeine for children under 12 and against any use of energy drinks for all children and teens. They also suggest limiting caffeine to at most 100 mg (about two 12 oz cans of cola) daily for those 12-18 years old. (American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychology July 2020) If you have questions on any of this information, please contact your child’s school nurse or pediatrician.

Side effects of caffeine:

  • Insomnia
  • Jumpiness, hyperactivity, and anxiety
  • Nausea and lack of appetite
  • Headache
  • Tremor and dizziness
  • Increased energy and reduced fatigue
  • Improved focus and task completion

The popular Prime energy drink is not for children. It contains 200 milligrams of caffeine in a 12-ounce can, which is about five times the amount of caffeine in a comparable can of Coca-Cola. They have this on their FAQ page:

  • Is PRIME Energy suitable for everyone?

PRIME Energy is not recommended for children under the age of 18, women who are pregnant or nursing, or individuals who are sensitive to caffeine.

FROM THE ALL NIGHT GRAD PARTY

Please PAY IT FORWARD

Every year the graduating class experiences the party of all parties in a very SAFE environment. The only way the kids (who do say it’s one of the most memorable ’school’ events they have ever experienced) can enjoy this is from the amazing generous time from volunteers pulling it all together. Many hands make light work - and fun ‘work’ too!!

Join our committee with friends or even to make new like-minded friends whose mission is to create FUN.

Please consider helping out this year - in ANY capacity.

Underclassmen parents can be part of the planning ready for new parents to take over the reins by the time your kids are in Senior Year. Senior parents can of course help out too, but not the night of however.

Let's create fun together…
Reach out today to find out how you can help.

FROM THE MCPE

The start of November for many means entering the holiday season. For MCPE, it means we’re underway with our first grant cycle of the 2023-24 school year, with our first set of submitted grants to be reviewed and approved this month! This also makes it a great time to look back at the impact of prior grants in Medfield schools - such as this Numicons interactive math tiles set funded by an MCPE grant for Memorial School in the 2021-22 school year. These manipulatives provide a hands-on way for students to learn about early math concepts, and help prepare them for future math skills like multiplication and division.

Follow MCPE on Instagram (@mcpe_medfield) to see more updates on how your donations make a real impact on our Medfield students!
